President’s Message

October 2019

Dear CSTM members,

As the fall season has begun, I would like to give you an update on CSTM activities.

The CSTM/HQ/CBS Joint conference was held this year in Calgary with the theme “Transfusing Wisely”.  CSTM’s first Standing Scientific Committee did a tremendous job to bring us an impressive program with interesting topics for everyone.  The venue, food and activities were excellent and not possible without the generous support of the sponsors, exhibitors, and the tireless work of the local organizing committee. Conference abstracts and presentations are now posted on the website and the top four abstracts are anticipated to be published in Transfusion Medicine Reviews.

I am happy to inform you that Dr. Pavensky has provided the “open access” paper that was not yet published at the time of her presentation at the CSTM, limiting the details she could share.  This paper is now posted on the CSTM website: A regional massive hemorrhage protocol developed through a modified Delphi technique. I congratulate and thank the many collaborators who worked to produce this work that is sure to help hospitals across Canada establish a massive hemorrhage protocol.

The Education Day took place September 20, 2019 in Courtenay BC and was very well attended by technologists and physicians and of note, a significant number of nurses. The program was very interesting and I encourage you to watch for the audio-visual presentations that will be posted on the CSTM website in the coming weeks.  They will be available under Education Events on the website.

We held a face-to-face board meeting September 21 which included a review and updating of our strategic plan.  The 2019 Member Survey results were very helpful and I sincerely thank those who took the time to answer the survey.  The CSTM has much to offer and we will be striving to increase sponsorships and better promote our resources.  You will be hearing more in the coming months about rebranding the TSO mailing list to ensure that all those involved in transfusion across Canada are aware of its value and know that all are welcome to join in to ask questions and share their knowledge.

Our annual conferences are held in larger cities to ensure good attendance so we select smaller cities to host CSTM Education Days.  This provides opportunity for those involved in transfusion in such areas to attend an all day event dedicated to transfusion medicine.  If you are interested in hosting a CSTM Education Day we want to hear from you!  Please contact the CSTM at cstm@secretariatcentral.com

The 2020 CSTM Conference in Montreal, May 28 to June 31 will be held at the Centre Mont Royal and the Standing Scientific Committee is planning an exciting program with the theme “Science at the Forefront”.  For those needing to apply early for funding to attend, rooms have been reserved for attendees at the Delta Hotel on President Kennedy for $219/night and Le Nouvel Hotel & Spa for $159/night.  The registration cost will be similar to last year not exceeding $550 for registration (member rate), $90 for each 1/2 day on the Thursday workshop day.  Note that the total cost of registration plus membership will be less than the cost of non-member registration alone.

The CSTM annual conference is an excellent way to learn and stay up to date in transfusion medicine and to network and share knowledge among your old and new fellow blood bankers across the country. You won’t want to miss it!  If funding is an issue, don’t forget that there are bursaries available.  For more information on these and to access the application forms please click this link

On behalf of the CSTM board of directors I wish you the very best,

Ann Wilson

CSTM President
