Using Blood Wisely

Is your hospital using blood wisely?

A new campaign challenges hospitals to find out.

This September, Choosing Wisely Canada, in collaboration with Canadian Blood Services, launched Using Blood Wisely, a national campaign to decrease inappropriate red blood cell transfusion practices in Canada.

The campaign challenges hospitals across Canada to conduct a spot audit of recent red blood cell transfusions to see how they compare to national appropriateness benchmarks.
  • Meet benchmarks?   Get designated as a “Using Blood Wisely Hospital” and be recognized nationally.
  • Not quite there yet?   Enrol in a quality improvement initiative proven to reduce inappropriate transfusions and qualify for designation upon meeting the benchmarks.
Whether your hospital has good transfusion practices already in place or has room for improvement, participating in Using Blood Wisely is an opportunity to show leadership and make a positive contribution towards conserving Canada’s national blood supply.

Get involved:   Take the challenge to find out if your hospital is using blood wisely.
