Hemovigilance in Canada is under threat.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) funds and houses the Transfusion Transmitted Injury Surveillance System (TTISS) and the Transfusion Error Surveillance System (TESS), through their Blood Safety Contribution Program (BSCP).  The BSCP was announced to be sunset as of March 31, 2026; without consultation from the blood system and its stakeholders.

Email notification from the Public Health Agency of Canada: Update on PHAC’s Blood Safety Contribution Program

CSTM is providing information on this page regarding the sunsetting announcement, responses from concerned stakeholders, background information on the genesis of hemovigilance in Canada, and links to two independent audits recommending reforming hemovigilance in Canada rather than sunsetting it.

We would ask that you inform yourself to advocate for Canadian hemovigilance, with resources and avenues on this page that will be continually updated until hemovigilance is revitalized in Canada.

Thank you for your support!
